Greensburg Glossary: Solar Energy

Simply put, solar energy is the light and heat provided by the sun, sitting up there some 93 million miles away. Putting it in more environmentally specific language, the American Solar Energy Society explains solar energy as such: “The United States currently relies heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for its energy. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable, that is, they draw on finite resources that will eventually dwindle, becoming too expensive or too environmentally damaging to retrieve. In contrast, renewable energy resources – such as wind and solar energy – are constantly replenished and will never run out.” Applications for solar power are broad and include areas like architecture, agriculture, horticulture, lighting, water heating, along with cooling and ventilation. For those needing a little more detail about harnessing the power of the sun, this quiz will help shine some light on the matter.
