As we recently saw on Hollywood Green, going shopping for green products is easier now than it ever was before. However, it can be difficult for a lot of people. Many people hear the words ‘green’ and ‘shopping’ together and don’t know where to start when it comes to their own shopping lists. The truth is that there are green or greener alternatives to almost every product out there. Still confused? Well, here are some tips.
Your clothing and accessories can all be greener. Stores like Wal*Mart and Target now have lines of clothing that are designed to be eco-friendly. Another way that you can make sure you’re buying green accessories and clothing is to buy used. Used things have nowhere to go other than landfills if people don’t take advantage of them. The advantage is that you can get used items at discount AND help to be more eco-friendly in your shopping.
When it comes down to items like books, magazines, and other forms of print entertainment, make sure you buy items that are printed on recycled or at least recyclable paper. Luckily, most books and magazines are already embracing the recycling frontier whole-heartedly. However, you can still do your part by only supporting those companies in particular.
In the realm of food, try to buy your groceries as organically as possible. If you can grow them yourself or buy them locally, even better! What’s the big fuss about locally grown goods? Well, they help keep down the demand for huge non-organic farmed food and they reduce emissions from distribution trucks.
There are plenty of other ways in which you can green up your shopping. Consider everything that your buying from your light bulbs to your home decorations and ask yourself if you can think of a greener alternative for that product. I have a feeling you’ll be able to.
