Eat Only Organic for a Week with These 5 Tips

Make a bold green move: Avoid non-organic foods for a week. It's not as hard as it sounds.

Now, I know there are already plenty of converts to organic and local food—but do all of you eat it exclusively, every day? Challenge yourself to make this week's Bold Green Move: eat nothing but local and/or organic food for seven days in a row.

The following is a brief rundown of what exactly this will entail, along with some pointers to help you achieve an uninterrupted week of organic eating bliss.

  1. Make a plan: Take a minute or two to draw up a brief outline of the meals you plan on eating over the course of the week. Look up organic-friendly recipes (try some of Emeril's) and note the ingredients you'll need.

  2. Prepare, prepare: Stock up at your local organic food market (or shopping only in the organic section of your supermarket) and farmers' market with your outlined list handy so you'll be ready for the all-organic week.

  3. Stick to the Plan: Remember, this is a Bold Green Move for a reason—it's not always going to be easy. Resist reaching for those Doritos you left laying around, and if you've forgotten an ingredient or two for dinner halfway through the week, don't give in and replace it with a not-so organic option.

  4. Be wary of where you eat out:Ensure that the restaurants you dine at offer organic options—meaning no fast food. (Well, almost no fast food)

  5. Host an all-organic dinner party on the last day: To celebrate, of course. Tell friends to bring organic wine.

Good luck, and enjoy a week of healthy eating. Drop me a comment if you do undertake this nutritional venture to tell me how you fared.
