I've learned that the key to great skin is not what you put on the outside of your body, but rather, what you eat. Look at your skin, hair, and nails and you can very often tell if you're eating right. Is your skin soft and moist or it is dry and rough? If you don't feed the body's largest organ what it needs to look its best, you'll look older, rather than youthful . What's more, most of the foods that keep your skin looking good and also much easier on the planet. Check out my five foods for keeping your skin young and firm:

  1. Choose Omega 3's.
Your body cannot make these naturally and you can tell within a month if you're not getting enough of them. Your skin will be dry and sunken. Make sure that you are eating enough fish like sustainably caught salmon or if you don't eat fish, sprinkle flax seeds on you foods or use flax seed oil in your salad dressing. Hemp is also a good source of omegas. Either way, make absolutely sure that you get enough or your skin (as well as your hair) will pay the price.

  2. Add more vitamin A.
A deficiency in vitamin A is often what's to blame for dry, scaly skin or breakouts for those with acne. Foods rich in vitamin A include sweet potatoes, organic carrots, spinach, local milk, and local egg yolks.

  3. Add more vitamin C.
Vitamin C is another potent antioxidant important to fighting the free radicals that cause your skin to age. Get it in citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts bought locally to ensure that the antioxidant power is still fully intact.

  4. Make sure to include zinc.
Zinc helps the body produce collagen which serves to naturally firm the skin and therefore a deficiency can mean sagging. Get your daily allowance by eating locally produced cheeses, whole grains, and beans.

  5. Include selenium.
Selenium is a trace mineral that guards your skin's elasticity. It also helps your body to detoxify and helps fight free radicals as well. Organic brazil nuts, oysters, mushrooms, and sunflower seeds all contain high amounts of the mineral.
