If you're still working on your New Year's resolution to quit smoking, researchers say that lacing up your running shoes (or boxing gloves) could give you the shot in the arm you need.
Physically active smokers may be more successful laying off the cigarettes than those who are more sedentary, according to a new study from the University of Toronto that examined the demographics of nearly 23,000 Canadian smokers. Researchers found that physically active men were 36 percent more likely to have tried to quit smoking within the past year, while physically active women were 37 percent more likely to do so than their couch-potato peers.
"Previous studies have suggested that participating in one healthy behavior, such as physical activity, may lead to the adoption or maintenance of another positive behavior, such as smoking cessation," says Wayne deRuiter, lead author of the study, which was published in the May issue of the American Journal of Public Health. ::Newswise
