As I sit here typing, my mouth waters at the thought of these delectable little numbers. The texture, the outer coating, it’s all just so addictive. Sometimes you just can't pass them up any longer. I know they're not the best things for you, but if you make them at home at least you know what you're eating and you can control your eco-impact as well.

Now for the doughnuts:

3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, sift before measuring
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup sugar
2 organic eggs
3 tbsp shortening
1 cup organic milk
vegetable oil for frying

Toppings
powdered sugar
cinnamon and sugar
melted organic chocolate

Method

  1. Sift the first six ingredients together.

  2. Beat the eggs, shortening, and milk together at a medium speed.

  3. Stir in dry ingredients and chill dough for about three hours.

  4. Roll the dough out and form doughnuts with a doughnut cutter.

  5. Pour oil into a large pan, enough to cover the bottom about two inches. Heat on medium to about 350 degrees.

  6. They should fry quickly on the first side and then you can flip them over with tongs. Once the second side is brown remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

  7. Do the same for the holes that you cut out and make doughnut holes.

  8. Once the doughnuts are drained, choose your toppings.
