I have cupboards filled with wedding presents and things that we have acquired over the course of our lives together, and I'm sure many of you do, as well. So why not give your kids something special for Christmas rather than putting it in your will?
Put some thought into your gift-don't just haul something out of the closet. We're not talking about offloading stuff you hate; that's what garage sales are for. And no re-gifting. I'm talking about things that are a part of your family life, and things you know they would love.
When my first child, was born my mother gave me the family cookie jar filled with my favourite cookies. Conversely, maybe there is some family item that you have always treasured and would love to have. By all means, put it on your Christmas list, but remember, be fair. Don't ask for something that you think the giver might not be ready to relinquish. If you have siblings, don't ask for something that you know they covet, or something that is of a disproportionate value to what you would normally receive. In my experience, the thing you love the most is something that has a nice memory attached, so ask for that.
All I know is I'm going to have to think hard about which of my kids is going to be the recipient of these babies.
