Happy 3.14 or March 14, also known as Pi Day. In honour of this great unsung holiday, Planet Green would like to present of roundup, as it were, of circular delights, also known as pie.

Over at our sister site TreeHugger, we were baking apple pies last October using local apples. Apples are the great mainstays of fresh fruit in the winter. It's the one local fruit that I can still buy in March.

We were also whipping up a delicious pumpkin pie as part of a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. If you are using canned pumpkin, you can make this pie anytime. If you want to use fresh ingredients, just substitute squash for the pumpkin which is no longer available in this season.Earlier this year, I was soundly criticized by my eldest child for mistaking National Pie Day with Pi Day when I did a post on making pies out of your leftovers. Of course, leftovers are always in season, and you can do this today without any special ingredients at all.

In the week leading up to the Academy Awards last month we did a series on foods related to the nominated movies. We absolutely had to have meat pies à la Sweeney Todd. I will freely admit that there is nothing particularly green about this, it was just a bit of fun. Even tree-huggers can have a sense of humour.
