While much of the food we eat is grown during the growing season from spring to late summer, the shorter days and colder weather doesn't mean it's impossible to eat seasonally and locally all year round. As local, family-farmed food and the farmer's markets that sell it become more popular, so do year-round and winter markets.
Here in the Seattle area, for example, the market in the University District is open every Saturday (from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.) all year, and the West Seattle market is open every Sunday in January and February. But there are markets all over the country that stay open to sell winter vegetables and greens, seeds for planting, fiber, cheeses, preserves, and other delicious local foods.Staying on the west coast, California and Oregon both have regular winter markets. Across the country, on the easy coast, there are winter markets in Virginia, New York, Vermont, Maine, and many other coastal states. Plus, plenty of mid-western locales, like Ohio and Dane County, where Madison, Wis. is located, have winter markets, as well. Use the EcoWidget on your desktop or visit Local Harvest on the Web to find the winter farmers' market nearest you, and enjoy family-farmed, local, seasonal food anytime of the year.
