Emeril Expert Clip: Zero Waste Tailgating

Meet the Whole Foods Market Green Mission Specialist

Mon Jan 12, 2009 11:15 AM ET

Emeril has all the recipes you need to ensure the food at your tailgating party is delicious and green. But what about everything else? How can we make our tailgating party zero-waste?

The place to start is with plates, cups, and napkins and reusing is the name of the game. You might not want to bring the plates from your kitchen to the party, so consider picking up some dinnerware at the local thrift shop. If you're worried about mismatched colors and patterns messing up your party's color theme, considered reusable plates made from a recyclable plastic, available at most camping-supply stores.

For items that can't be reused, like some plastic food-storage bags, look for the compostable label. These items break-down quickly in the compost pile, ending up as food for your garden instead of waste in a landfill.

To keep all of these items organized, make sure your compost and recycling bins are clearly labeled and that people know what should be separated. Color coding and stencils make this easy.

For more tips on how to make your tailgating party zero-waste, check out this online video from Emeril Green.
