How to Set Up an Eco-Friendly Lemonade Stand

Give the kids fabulous childhood memories with a greener take on a lemonade stand.

Lemonade stands certainly conjure up memories of childhood. That feeling of such importance as you tried to sell the sugary lemon water to the neighbors. It was my first taste of entrepreneurship and my first attempt to make my own money. But showing the kids a lemonade stand doesn’t have to mean making that terribly processed, powdered excuse for lemonade that many of us now hold so dear. Why not make lemonade like they did back in the old days, when it was still fresh, delicious, and worth selling? Real lemonade is made with ingredients that come straight from the planet without any processing. That means better lemonade, no wasteful packaging, and no energy used in its production according to Mary Jane's Farm.

Homemade Lemonade


4 lemons
1/2 cup raw local honey
1 quart boiling water
Mint

Method:

  1. Wash and juice the lemons. Put the peels in a bowl and add the honey and water. Let it sit for about 30 minutes in order to release the lemon from the peel.

  2. When the mixture is cool remove peels and add in juice. Stir well.

  3. Chill the mixture and garnish with fresh mint.


Lemonade Stand Accessories


Signs

Find old cardboard boxes in the attic or garage and cut the sides and tops off of the boxes. Have the kids decorate the signs with milk paints, a nontoxic alternative to latex or acrylic. Don't waste paper and money buying poster board to make the signs.

Cups

Collect eclectic plastic cups to use at the lemonade stand. Cups don't have to match at all. You can also use ceramic mugs or any cups that you're not worried about breaking. There are also biodegradable cup options for customers on-the-go. Give them a place to compost or tell them that they can when they get home!
