Want to eat out, without packing on unnecessary pounds? Here are some tips from Health's experts Hope S. Warshaw and Cheryl Forberg on how to avoid common menu pitfalls. You'll save calories and create less waste, too.
1. Order it your way: Don't be afraid to request to have that shrimp special grilled, instead of fried, say Warshaw and Foberg. You're the customer, so most restaurants will do anything in their power to keep you happy.
2. Think tapas: Skip the entree and put together a healthier meal out of two or three appetizers and side dishes.
3. Beware of the four Cs: That is, "crunch," "cheesy," "crispy," and "creamy." These words are code for fatty foods.
4. Say goodbye to bread: No need to test your willpower--take just one piece, and then ask the waiter to remove the breadbasket from your table.
5. Undress your salad: Instead of drowning your salad in thick dressing, dilute it with a squeeze of lemon or a few drops of vinegar.
6. Get your doggy bag up front: Ask for half your meal to be wrapped up before you dig in.
Difficulty level: Easy
