Do It Yourself | Green Home | Health

It's no mystery that health care is a problem in many countries and the USA is certainly one of those countries. When you get hurt, figuring out how to heal yourself without health insurance can certainly be a pricey process. In addition to that, a lot of the elements that go into hospitals aren't all that eco-friendly, anyway. (Think about all of the plastic wasted every time something is opened, etc.)

One of my bigger fears as an uninsured freelancer with a dare devil streak is hurting myself. My brother has had to have stitches a few times now (again, the dare devil DNA) and I often ask myself: would I stitch myself?

It would save time, money, and I could make sure that I use an eco-friendly material for the stitches if I did it myself.

If you are ever so brave, here is how you can stitch yourself up from home:

  1. Set a burning candle on a table with a bowl of rubbing alcohol. Let your thread soak in the alcohol.

  2. Get a bucket of ice and numb the area of your body you need to stitch with the ice. Never drink alcohol to numb yourself if you're the one doing the stitching. You can't afford to mess this up.

  3. Run your needle through the flame and run the alcohol-soaked thread through the needle.

  4. Tie a knot at the end of your thread. This will be much like sewing fabric.

  5. Run the needle through the skin that is closest to the cut.

When you know that your skin has healed over, you can take out the stitches yourself. Do this with small scissors.

You can do it!
