READ MORE ABOUT:
I got this cookbook for Christmas and I'm thoroughly enjoying reading through it. Adrian and Michael Daniel are brothers who run The Gate Restaurant in London. They come from an Indo-Iraqi Jewish background, so the recipes in the book are quite eclectic.
The writing style is chatty, filled with little anecdotes about their grandmother, and a number of the recipes are inspired by foods they ate as children. I've only made two recipes from the book so far, but there are plenty of enticing things to try.
They have split their main course meals into two chapters, one for hot and spicy mains, and one for tamer fare. There is also an entire chapter devoted to pestos, chutneys, and salsas, which all look quite easy and sound delicious. Most of the recipes are pretty straightforward and don't look difficult at all, but there are a number of stuffed vegetables recipes that look a bit fussy to me. The focus of the book is on starters and mains and it's pretty light on dessert recipes, although their recipe for Baklava made me want to have a party just so I could justify making it.
There are lots of great photographs in the book and it makes deciding what to cook all the more difficult. Over the next few weeks I'll be going back to this book and I expect I'll be sharing more recipes from The Gate. They also have an earlier book entitled The Gate Easy Vegetarian Cookbook (2007, Mitchell Beazley), which I think I might have to take a look at.
