India's Vegetarian Cooking by Monisha Bharadwaj (2007, Kyle Books) is a great way to ease yourself into Indian cooking. The recipes are clearly written and don't have the endless lists of ingredients that you sometimes see in this style of cooking. The food is presented in a beautiful way, but you can see from the recipes that this is food that can be easily made in a home kitchen. I've made a number of things from it and have had good success.

The book is subtitled "A Regional Guide" and is organized that way. Bharadwaj has chapters headed The North, The South, The East, and the West. Under each heading, she includes recipes for vegetables, breads, rice, pulses, dairy, accompaniments, puddings, drinks, and basics. The book is lavishly illustrated, not only with food but with photos of India. You can open this book to any page and be enticed by the amazing looking dishes. Bharadwaj also writes about the differences in the regions, the cultures and the kind of food they prepare.

Curl up with this book on a cold afternoon, with a glass of wine in front of the fire, and just immerse yourself in this lovely book. Then at dinner time, get up and make a curry, but you'll find it hard to choose which one. You can check out the Recipe of the Week on TreeHugger last Friday, which I took from this book.
