Unknown.

My son Hugh had a great idea this spring. Rather than do the traditional university pub crawl he suggested doing a secondhand bookstore crawl. So he gathered his scholarly (read: geek) friends together, and we spent a leisurely Sunday afternoon wandering from book store to bookstore in downtown Toronto. It was a huge success and so last Sunday we had the autumn version.

While we waited for everyone to arrive at the designated meeting place, Hugh served his homemade cheesecake with cranberry coulis. The spring offering was homemade strawberry pie. Both seasonally appropriate. He is his mother's son, after all.

I saw the outing as a great opportunity to check out some older cookbooks. I scored a couple of books which I had used before from the library, so I knew they were good. One was Fresh Food Fast: Delicious, Seasonal Vegetarian Meals in Under an Hour by Peter Berley (2004, William Morrow Cookbooks). This is another of those cookbooks which is organized by season. Berley gives you 12 menus for each season and then provides a shopping list of ingredients, the equipment you will need and a "game plan" for organizing the actual cooking time. There is also information on pantry items and equipment, including how to use a pressure cooker.

This is a vegetarian cookbook, but there are plenty of delicious meals to please everyone. Some of the recipes are a bit longer then the last cookbooks I have talked about, but everything that I have made so far has been pretty easy.

Later I will give you a recipe for a hearty ragout that would make a great mid-week dinner.
