Three meals a day slows down your metabolism and causes you to overeat at each meal, right? The question is, how big are your meals? According to a Brad Pilon video found on Reader’s Digest meal size matters. The size of what’s considered a 'mini meal' is actually much smaller than we tend to think, so we end up having too many calories.

Mini meals should be around 45 calories like half a banana, a peach, 1/2 ounce cheddar cheese, etc. According to Pilon, when considering a meal, these aren't always “evenly distributed” carbs, fats, and protein meals. In order to actually consume six meals a day and lose weight, you're more likely to have three moderate meals and two snacks of 45 calories or less.

In my experience, eating smaller meals during the day, unless carefully portioned out can mean constant grazing. If you have a tendency to pick at foods or snack throughout the day, it’s better to consume three meals a day and break up the time between when you eat.

The body needs time to digest food between meals. Foods are only healthy for the body if the body can properly digest them. From an Ayurvedic perspective, meal times are very important. Eat only when you are genuinely hungry and listen to the messages that your body is sending you. Eat only when your last meal has been fully digested, between three and six hours between meals.

This depends on your dosha, but meal times should be around 8 am for breakfast, lunch at noon, and dinner after 5 pm, but before the sun goes down. Lunch is the largest meal of the day when your digestion is strongest and dinner is the smallest when digestion is weakest. Make you meals a celebration of food and forget about the kitchen between meals.
