Growing up is hard on teens and it's also hard on the parents that have to deal with them. I can only imagine what I put my parents through every day of my teen years. As your teen grows up, their hormones are constantly changing. And in addition to the body changes, teens are under a ton of pressure to get into a good college, succeed in sports, drama, or whatever their after school activity, and fit in. All these pressures can sometimes lead to some anxiety issues. Parents can feel pretty paralyzed when it comes to dealing with these issues, but knowing how to handle your teens is half the battle.

  • Encourage relaxation.
The ability to reduce stress needs to start early. Give your kids some relaxation techniques like yoga, deep breathing, and listening to soothing music. I only wish that I had known about yoga in my teens, it seriously would have changed everything. I would have had a much better understanding that problems will pass and are not the end of the world. I will never forget when my first boyfriend dumped me. To this day I have never been so upset and for what, it just seems so minuscule today.

  • Make sure that your teen is eating properly.

Your diet has a direct effect on how you feel day to day. Choose foods that don't induce anxiety like excessive caffeine and processed sugars. Checkout my guide to foods that make you happy.

  • Do not let your child isolate themselves.
Make sure that your child chooses activities (they like) to be involved in so they don't have tons of downtime. Kids are taught to balance their time when they have a lot to do and there is also less time to get into trouble. Don't force your kids into any activity that they are not interested in, but encourage them to get involved with friends and with their community.

  • Take them to a therapist if needed and make sure the lines of communication are always open.
If you think that your child is having serious difficulties, there is never any harm in talking to someone. Sometimes that is all that they really need to do. Most of all, keep a good watch on them and let them know that no matter what, you love them and will be there to help them.
