There are many things we all can do to lessen our food's impact on the planet, from joining a community-supported agriculture co-op and enjoying local food to supporting or even owning an organic restaurant. To that end, the National Restaurant Association has launched their Conserve Initiative to help restauranteurs make their bistros, cafes and eateries greener, by helping them conserve water, energy, and more.

The site has a handy list of top 10 tips that we would all be smart to follow, along with some far-out facts and stats -- did you know that running the faucet for five minutes uses nearly as much energy as running a 60-watt light bulb for 14 hours? -- designed to help restaurants tread a little more lightly on the planet.

So, what does all this mean to you? Aside from following the tips at home, this is a great opportunity for you to help your favorite restaurant go green. The site lays it all out, making it simple and straightforward to take a few small steps (or giant leaps) toward a greener business, but not all restaurants know about it. So, talk it up, to your favorite chef, waitress, busboy or restauranteur; once they know how easy it is to save money, improve efficiency and reap all the benefits of going green, they'll have you to thank for getting them on board. See what success looks like and start spreading the news at Conserve.
