Cleansing your sinuses with a neti pot can relieve symptoms associated with colds, flu, sinus infections, nasal dryness, allergies, and other sinus irritations. It also helps reduce swelling of the nasal membranes. According to Healing Daily, in the United States, sinus problems are the number one reason people see a doctor. Alternative health practitioners throughout the world recommend the regular practice of nasal cleansing using a saline solution as part of a regular regimen of health and wellness, a basic health-maintenance activity equal to flossing your teeth. With cold season close at hand and running noses everywhere, why not try a new method of keeping your nasal passages in tip top shape? Here are some tips on neti pot use (although you need to read the directions that come with it as well).

  1. First, make a nasal irrigation solution. The solution is a combination of 8 ounces of water and ¼ tsp pure non-iodized salt.

  2. Pour a good amount through one nostril, then follow the same procedure with the other nostril.

  3. Resist the urge to swallow. When you begin irrigating your sinuses with your neti pot, keep your mouth open and keep breathing through your mouth the entire time. While breathing, keep your throat completely open.

  4. Blow your nose properly. After you've finished irrigating your sinuses with the neti pot, blow the mucus from your nostrils. When you blow, you must have both nostrils open (even if you haven't irrigated one of them yet).
