Humans are like bears in the way that we like to come out of hibernation every spring and show off our pasty whites to the world once again. I remember when I lived in DC, on the first day of warm weather, you've never seen that many people outside. And that holds true for the party scene as well. There seems to be event after event, any reason to celebrate is always welcomed and people will think of just about any reason to throw a party.

We're all fans of those thoughtful guests that always remember to bring a hostess gift. After all that's a true sign of class in my book. Make your own creative hostess gifts and you'll impress your guests with the thoughtful gesture and you'll save money at the same time.

Chocolate Chip Cookies in a Jar

What You'll Need
8 oz. jar
¾ cup sugar
¾ cup packed organic brown sugar
2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
¾ tsp salt
2 cups chocolate chips
6 inch x 6 inch piece of scrap fabric
Hole puncher
3 inch by 4 inch heavy note card
20 inches of elastic ribbon

Method

  1. Add all the food ingredients to the jar carefully so that they are perfectly separated in layers. Make sure that the jar is filled to the top and if not add more chocolate chips so that the ingredients are stuck in layers.

  2. Place the scrap fabric on top of the jar and put the lid on.

  3. Write the recipe for chocolate chip cookies on the small note card. Adding all the wet ingredients including 1 cup butter, softened, 2 large eggs, beaten, and 1 tsp vanilla extract. Write the directions for making them: Mix sugar, brown sugar, butter, vanilla and eggs in a large bowl by hand. Stir in flour, baking soda, and salt. The dough will be very stiff. Stir in chocolate chips. Scoop out dough with an ice cream scooper onto greased cookie sheets and bake at 350 degrees for about 10 to 12 minutes.

  4. Hole punch the card and thread the elastic ribbon. Tie it to the jar.

  5. You can really use this cookie in a jar idea for all your favorite cookie recipes as well.
