For me, Slow Food is the organization that reintroduced sustainable eating. It brought the best in local foods back into the lime light. Instead of just stuffing down a meal in 15 seconds in front of the television, we were again reminded of the importance of experiencing all the senses while eating. And that's certainly worth a celebration.

December 10 marks the 20th anniversary of Slow Food. The celebration will happen in 150 countries with Slow Food's 100,000 members, organized in 1,300 convivia (local chapters) and the Terra Madre network: more than 2,000 food communities, according to the press release.

The day, which is being called Terra Madre Day, will celebrate the success that the organization has achieved in showing the importance of food diversity, farm to fork methods, and a cultural shift in the way we view food. Events will vary from convivia to convivia but will include communal celebratory meals, cooking demonstrations, local producer excursions, film viewings, and other local food related events.

Get Involved in Slow Food
If you're not already involved in Slow Food, consider joining today. If there's not a Slow Food convivia in your area, why not start one up?
