Palm oil—the ubiquitous food and beauty ingredient notorious for causing rainforest destruction—can also sadly be spotted in sweets. Hershey’s is just one of the several companies called out for using palm oil in their chocolate candy products. And with brimming-over Easter baskets just around the bend, the demand for candy—and therefore the oil—does more damage on Mama Earth than one would think.
Wishing to break the cycle, the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) has created a way for us to send Hershey’s a message to remove palm oil from the chocolate-y mix. Dubbing it “Hershey’s Week of Action,” they’re asking us to head out to our nearby markets selling Hershey’s brand Easter candy and stamp the products with stickers that say, “Warning: Product May Contain Rainforest Destruction.”
If you’re wondering whether stamping Easter eggs and bunnies will really make the message stick in the minds of Hershey’s, this sweet bit of news may help. According to RAN’s website, their similar stickering campaigns on Halloween and Valentine’s Day helped convince more that 40 companies to sign their Palm Oil Pledge.
If you go to RAN’s campaign site and fill out a simple information form, the organization will send you a take action toolkit complete with stickers, a step-by-step resource guide and ways to stay in touch with RAN staff.
If you’re interested in eco-reforming mainstream chocolate and supporting the rainforest’s habitat and species, head over to the website soon. Stickering will strategically take place from April 6-12—the week right before Easter which also happens to be one of Hershey’s biggest sales weeks of the year. Now that's a way to vote with our dollars.
