Just 20 minutes of any physical activity--even if it's housework--in a week is enough to boost your mental health, according to a recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The findings were based on a sample of nearly 20,000 men and women who were asked about their state of mind and how much weekly physical activity they participated in. Although 3,000 participants said they were suffering from stress or anxiety, researchers found that any form of daily physical activity was associated with a lower risk of distress, even after other influential factors-such as age, gender, and the presence of any chronic conditions-were taken into consideration.

Activities deemed beneficial included housework, gardening, walking, and sports. Sports took the top spot, lowering the risk of distress by 33 percent. And, while just 20 minutes of activity was enough to improve the average person's mental state, the more activity he or she engaged in, the lower his or her chances of psychological stress. ::Eurekalert
