Ayurveda is an ancient medicinal from dating back to the 1st millennium BCE in India. Its popularity here in the West is rising however, thanks to Yoga and consumer demand for more natural, organic beauty products and routines.
For those practicing Ayurdeva, it’s a way of life and its regimens—though worth doing, in my opinion—can scale on the side of time consuming. Some therapies involve rubbing down your skin with sesame oil, taking steam baths and getting massages.
If you’re looking to taste Ayurdeva in an easier, doable, and more affordable way, I suggest taking baby steps. This simple morning concoction can help rev up your day’s digestion, reduce bloating, aid in elimination and in general, help keep your skin and eyes clear and sparkling thanks to the lemons' anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties.
Here’s what to do:
- Boil two cups of water as though you are making tea
- Cut an organic lemon in half
- Pour the boiled water into a large mug and squeeze in half of the lemon
- Mix in a teaspoon or two of raw, local honey according to your taste
- Sip away and store the other half of the lemon in the fridge for tomorrow
I’ve been drinking this zesty, lemon tea daily for the last month or so and it has done wonders. Granted, I didn’t have any of the above ailments (OK, maybe a lone pimple here or there) that I was looking to cure, but simply looking for a healthy way to wake up and feel great—as an alternative to my morning caffeine fix.
If you end up trying it out, or already are—let me know in the comments below!
