This is the second article in a series about how to prevent and beat cancer by going green.

Can we beat cancer? Or better yet can we avoid cancer altogether? Dr. David Servan-Schreiber, author of Anticancer A New Way of Life, thinks so. A brain cancer survivor himself, Servan-Schreiber knows about the importance of healthfy eating. We are what we eat, as the saying goes, and it turns out that certain foods, such as garlic can help inhibit cancer cell growth. Others, like simple sugars, can act as a cancer fuel.

After surgery to remove Servan-Schreiber's brain tumor, he asked his oncologist what could be done to reduce his chances of recurrence. The answer he received was basically, "Nothing much." This was the birth of Severan-Schreiber's idea for AntiCancer, as explained last week on The Early Show. Luckily, the book is an easy read, and could become a handbook for life for many of us.

The basics outlined by the good doctor? Moderate exercise, avoiding toxins, meditation, and, of course, healthy food.

Do you have an Anticancer diet?

Eat grass-fed organic animal products
Meat, cheese, yogurt, omega-3 eggs

Balance your diet
Reduce your intake of sugar, white flour, products containing omega-6s—sunflower oil, corn oil, safflower oil soybean oil, margarine. hydrogenated trans fat, non-organic animal fat (meat, eggs, dairy products)

Increase your omega-3 intake (found in fish, grass or flaxseed animal products, flaxseeds and oil)

Increase your intake of anticancer products (turmeric, green tea, soy, specific anticancer vegetables and fruits)

Filter Tap Water
Use a carbon filter or an inverse osmosis filter on your tap water or drink spring water.

Next in the series, we'll get a closer look at a list of anticancer recommended foods—and good news—they include wine and chocolate.
