Toxic Beaches Open

Local news station WKRG’s investigation of toxicity levels at Alabama heavily populated beaches produces explosive results.

WKRG teamed up with analytical chemist Bob Naman, who tested various water samples for petroleum, expecting to find no more than 5 parts per million (ppm). Instead, the results ranged from 16 ppm to 29 ppm. The most shocking came from a sample of water collected at Dauphin Island Marina, which when combined with an organic solvent that separates the oil from the water, exploded in his lab.

Naman thinks the reaction was caused by methane gas or Corexit, the dispersant that BP has been using in the Gulf.

GE Smart Grid

Last week GE made it clear that they are making a move to become the leader in smart grid technology with’ three very impressive announcements.

First, CEO Jeffrey Immelt announced an Ecomagination challenge which will award $200M for the brightest smart grid technologies, followed by the introduction of a new device called the Nucleus which can transmit data about your home’s energy use directly to your iPhone. They showcased a hot water heater which can immediately eliminate 8% of a home’s carbon footprint.

Grid technology, Data tracking, and Smart Appliances -- a triple threat that will make GE hard to beat in the booming Smart Grid market.

Gorey Inception

Move over Ebert and Roper, there’s a new film reviewer in town. Al Gore took the unprecedented step of waxing lyrical about Christopher’s Nolan sci-fi thriller Inception on his blog. But went on to fess up that proceeds from the “Benefit Premiere” went to his Alliance for Climate Protection, adding “so you could say I am biased”.
