Beauty pageants—with their glitz, glamor, and gowns—are not known for their environmental friendliness. And it seems that beauty queens would have—can we say priorities?—other than the planet.
The women featured in today's top five roundup, however, prove that beauty and environmentalism can go hand in hand.

Indeed, though beauty pageant contestants often claim a desire to save the world when at the podium, these top five beauty queens are actually doing it.
5. Priyanka Chopra

In at number five, Bollywood actress and Miss World 2000 Priyanka Chopra has achieved much in her 28 years. Add to that her newly appointed status as India's Green Ambassador.

Chopra will now be the face behind national eco-themed campaigns designed to spread awareness about issues like tiger conservation, the Ganga river clean up and shifting the mindset of India's 1 billion plus residents.
4. Shanna Moakler

In at number four, former Miss USA Shanna Moakler and former wife of Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker used to be a carnivore.

But concern for the health of her children and the for the well being of animals, the mother of two became a vegetarian and spokesperson for PETA. A foe to fur, she wants to use fur coats won in pageants to educate the public about the cruelty of the fur industry.
3. Amal Bennett-Judge
Although unsuccessful in her bid to become Miss D.C in 2008, this fashion student deserves a spot in our countdown.

Competing in a used evening gown and her mother's 50s vintage bathing suit, a first in the pageant world. A summer internship at Senator Harry Reid's office proved an eye opener and inspired Amal to start a recycling program at Howard University and organize a vintage fashion show.
2. Maria Menounos

In at number two, with a first runner-up title at the Miss Massachusetts USA 2000, Maria Manounos didn't make to the top of the pageant world, but she did go on to conquer entertainment television.

Menounos brought glamor to green living as the host Planet Green's "Hollywood Green." Menounos presented at the Earth Day Network's Climate Rally in Washington, DC this year and is the founder of a charity dedicated to affecting positive social change.

In at number one, there's nothing desperate about this Latin actress when it comes to saving the planet.
Longoria, the winner of Miss Corpus Christi in 1988, began her life as an environmentalist as a child growing up on ranch with her conservation minded father. Now the hybrid driving entrepreneur is owner of the LEED certified Las Vegas nightclub Beso and is developing a green mall in Portland.
