Nuclear Surprise
There were a few surprises in President Obama's 2011 budget on the issues of energy and the environment.
A new federal loan guarantee program will doll out $20 billion dollars to fund new nuclear power projects, bringing the total investment in nuclear to a whopping $54 billion. Some experts argue that this is a political move to get the GOP to more engaged in the renewable energy debate.
And while the DOE is scrapping subsidies to the fossil fuel industry, it will be awarding a record $545 million to back research into "clean coal".
