China Rails USA
China plans to bid for contracts to build a high speed rail network in the US, deputy railway minister Wang Zhiguo said Saturday.
Earlier this year, the White House announced $8 billion in grants for rail projects including the high-speed system in California, Florida and Illinois. China has already built 4000 miles of its own 16,000 mile high speed rail network to be completed in 2020 at a cost of $300 billion.
According to Wang: "China is willing to share its mature and advanced technology with other countries to promote development of the world's high-speed railways."

Daylight Losing Time
This weekend saw clocks in America spring forward to usher in Daylight Savings Time, an annual ritual long thought to conserve energy.
But a 2008 study by the University of California-Santa Barbara reveals that the opposite is true. Switching the state Indiana to (sun) daylight savings time cost households an additional $8.6 million in electricity bills, the reduced cost of lighting in the afternoons being offset by air conditioning on hot afternoons and heating on cool mornings.

Lagerfeld Glacier
Designer Karl Largerfeld debuted his Chanel Fall Winter 2010 Collection in Paris last weekend in front of a 265 ton glacier. What was his inspiration? Global warming? Drowning polar bears? Nope, it was apparently The Ice Hotel in Sweden, proving that fashion really is in a world of its own.
