Tomatoes!

We love tomatoes, maybe you do too? That's pretty much the inspiration for dedicating an entire section of our Organic Gardening feature to a single food. Delicious, cancer-fighting (and otherwise nutritious), and incredibly versatile, we cover how to grow them and how to use them in recipes or even as skincare. We want to pull tomatoes apart from the cornucopia of delicious garden-fresh produce and give them a Planet Green shout-out. Stay tuned for an opportunity to submit your own tomato-inspired haikus.

Here's what you can do if you have green tomatoes and the forecast calls for frost.

A Fantastic Fall Appetizer: Tomato Jam

An unusual and delicious savoury jam that you can use in a variety of ways. The thing I liked best was an appetizer I made of crostini with a slice of brie and a spoonful of homemade tomato jam. The crispiness of the crostini with the creaminess of the cheese (you could use goat cheese, too) and the deep, luscious flavour of the jam was addictive.

Try a New Vegetable: Heirloom Tomatoes with Couscous and Peas

I realize that tomatoes are hardly a new vegetable for people, but have you ever tried the heirloom tomatoes) that are making a resurgence at farmers' markets? They come in all colours, shapes and sizes and many don't look like tomatoes at all. Some of them are beautiful to look at and some of them are downright homely, but they have amazing flavours. Some of them are so sweet you can pop them in your mouth as though they were strawberries.

            Heirloom Tomatoes and You

The memories of a ripe summer tomato, still warm from the garden, sliced fresh on a plate with a dash of salt...heaven. And such a far cry from the pale-inside and disappointingly flavorless impostors that too often fill these days in for the idea of a real tomato. Whether au naturale on a plate or chopped up in a salsa, no tomato recipe can please if the tomato itself is a dud.

              Tan with Tomatoes?

I recently read Sara Novak's post on how to make your own suntan lotion. And I was all like, "This is a good and popular post. I'd better write something similar in the hopes that it also becomes popular." What I lack in originality, I make up for in cunning.
