"We are the dinosaurs, marching, marching!" If you have kids, you've likely heard Laurie Berkner belt out that song on her acoustic guitar. And you've probably stomped and sang along, walking in a circle in your living room. Or maybe it's just me. Berkner, the kind of kid's music singer that makes kid's music tolerable, has written and recorded "Open Your Heart" to help a children's charity this Valentine's Day. And for the rest of the month.
The song will benefit the Pajama Program, a national nonprofit. The idea is to encourage people to donate new, warm sleepwear and unused, nurturing books to kids in need during the month of February.
Berkner's song is available for free at the Pajama Program web site through the end of the month, Feb. 28.
The program helps kids who live in orphanages, group homes and shelters. And there are plenty that need help.
"In the U.S. foster care system, alone, there are more than 500,000 children," according to a news release.
"Every two seconds another child enters the system. Many have been abandoned or abused, and have never enjoyed the simple comfort of putting on a cozy pair of pajamas and having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime and read to them."
There also are teens that your donation can help. Since 1981, the Pajama Program has provided more than 513,000 pairs of new pajamas and 230,000 books to kids in need.
Berkner has encouraged fans to bring pajamas and books to her concerts. There are 70 Pajama Program chapters throughout the United States. The organization is headquartered in New York City. If you download, donate.
