Independence Day is coming, so why not declare your independence from single-use plastic bottles? Ditching disposables is the theme of the latest Green Music Group Challenge, from Bonnie Raitt, the blues guitarist, singer, songwriter and Grammy winner. The deadline is July 2, just before many Americans will ship off for a (hopefully extended) July 4 weekend. The fireworks here are the chance to win a year’s supply of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.
Ice cream!!! Plus, the Green Music Group, of which Raitt is a part, also will offset your carbon footprint for a year. If only they could offset the extra pounds you might put on. Which makes me wonder, how much is a year's supply of ice cream?
The challenge is pretty simple. Disposable water bottles are a waste. An estimated 50 billion (with a b) bottles of water are purchased every year in the U.S., and about more than half of them end up in landfills.
Members of the Green Music Group, which include artists and labels and venues, have been trying to reduce the waste by offering reusable water bottles as merchandise at shows. They're also using them backstage.
The GMG is encouraging people to "just say no" to the single-use waste, by taking a pledge with the Plastic Pollution Coalition.
Then, take a photo of your reusable bottle. The rules say "have fun and be creative," suggesting a picture of you using your reusable bottle under a waterfall. (Or maybe a shiny bottle full of Chubby Hubby? Just throwing that out there).
After you take the photo, the rest is just like previous challenges: Upload the photo and don't forget the special tag, in this case "SIX," all in CAPS.
The deadline again, is July 2, at noon. And besides the chance for ice cream and carbon offsets, every entry will put you in the running to win a Honda Insight hybrid.
As for what a year's worth of ice cream is, the fine print (.pdf) says it amounts to one pint a week for 52 weeks. Not bad. Possibly waist-line manageable. And you could share it with your friends.
