When it comes to celebrity vegans, artists aren't too surprising:
- The, um, hempish Woody Harrelson
- The cerebral Moby
- The sensitive Alicia Silverstone
But then you have a rougher, plant-based crowd:
- Future NFL Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez
- NHL Enforcer Georges Laraque
- Mixed Martial Arts Champ Mac Danzig
Well, there's one vegan out there who straddles both categories—a tough guy artist who'd choose tempeh over steak any day of the week: John Joseph of the Cro-Mags.
"I've been a vegetarian/vegan for close to 30 years," Joseph says. "It's what keeps me healthy enough to play the music I play live, which is very physical music." He adds: "Getting into yoga, vegetarianism and philosophy saved me from a life of crime. I have also lost a lot of people to cancer, so I just feel obligated to spread the knowledge I have gained in the last 29 years."

What Joseph means by spread the knowledge" is his latest book, Meat is For Pussies. It drops April 15 but it's far from the only vegan project Joseph has in the works. Here the deal in Joseph's own words:
- My new book is all about vegan health, and the polluting of the food system. by the government and the corporations.
- I'm doing an all-natural superfood line.
- I'm opening a fast food vegan restaurant in New York.
- I'm doing a vegan cookbook, and vegan training DVDs, with a whole bunch of dudes who do top levels of fitness, Ironman, kickboxing, and muay thai to get in shape.
