Homelessness is no small problem in Los Angeles: last year, the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority counted more than 42,000 residents of the county living on the street. But if you think there's nothing you can do, think again: by joining rock band Shirock at its fundraiser at The Roxy March 2, you can donate clothes to the city's Midnight Mission (and skip the entrance fee).
The event--which includes a fashion show and concert--will be hosted by Twilight actor Michael Welch (who plays rival human love interest Mike Newton in the vampire series), and is the fulfillment of a long-time goal for the band. "We've been wanting to play a full-band show in Los Angeles for a while," says founder Pap Shirock, "and we are always trying to tie a show into a cause that we are passionate about. Through our music, we are trying to connect to people and move them, but we know that sometimes it takes tangible things to speak into people's lives as well...so this addresses both of those sides."
The five-piece, Nashville-born band will also show off songs from the new album, Everything Burns, described as "anthem-driven rock songs with passionate lyrics that convey positive messages of hope." "With our music, rather than trying to get across a particular message, we just want to be honest and vulnerable, and write about what we see around us," says Shirock. "Sometimes the themes seem to line up with things we have on our minds a lot...But we write the good, the bad, and everything in between. We don't presume to have all the answers." The album shares its name with the band's non-profit organization, which encourages a movement of "Living for Things That Matter," according to the band. "We noticed so many people wanting to be a part of something bigger than themselves, but not necessarily knowing where to start, or if it would really matter. So one of our main goals is to help connect young people with things that are going on around them,in their communities and in the world, and giving them small, tangible steps that they can take to make an impact."
Can't make it to the event? Donate to Midnight Mission through the organization's website, MidnightMission.org, and support Everything Burns by purchasing an armband; proceeds go toward humanitarian efforts around the world.
