A beautiful and talented pop star known for her killer dance moves, Shakira's hips aren't her only ammunition for amazing the world; she's also humanitarian. Last week Shakira was honored by the United Nations labor agency for her work to promote education and social justice for children around the world.
The 33-year-old artist was honored for her Barefoot Foundation, a non-profit organization devoted to making education universally available to every child. The Barefoot Foundation focuses on working with boys and girls whose lives have been affected by violence and poverty, and currently supports six schools in Shakira's native Colombia. Thanks to these schools, over 5,000 children all have access to nutritious meals and education.
Shakira is also a founding member of the ALAS foundation which promotes public policies for children across Latin America and the Caribbean.
"We are pleased to honour what you are doing, to enable children and young people living in poverty to benefit from the empowering role and the transforming capacity of a quality education," said Juan Somavia, Director General of the International Labor Organization.
For all of her work, Shakira is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and is devoted to making sure that children are an integral part of global policy. In February she launched an $300 million initiative with the World Bank and the ALAS Foundation to expand development programs for young children, and in the same month she even met with President Obama to talk about policies regarding early childhood development
"It's not too late to keep our promise to our children, but we must act now. Together, we can make education and decent work for all a reality," said Shakira.
