This is better than fighting over a Black Friday bargain. Recently, 650 singers burst into Handel's Hallelujah Chorus in a middle of a Macy's department store in Philadelphia. Get ready. The shock and joy campaign may be coming to a city near you.
The Macy's performance was one of 1,000 Random Acts of Culture that the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will be funding for the next three years. They want to put classical music in front of the public, outside of performance halls.
See the Phili performance below, from the Opera Company of Philadelphia. Those department-store acoustics are nice. The singers were accompanied by a 28,000-pipe organ, the world's largest.
It's a weird but worthwhile concept. Random Acts is coming to others cities, the Knight folks say, including Akron, Charlotte, Detroit, Macon, San Jose, St. Paul and Miami.
They're asking folks to have their cell phones ready. Does anyone carry digital cameras anymore? The more videos, the better, we guess.
The Knight folks also are offering grants in the communities where the classical kindness occurs. The grants are for projects "that can create transformational and sustainable change through artistic excellence and collective cultural experiences."
