We've heard about Alyssa Milano's amazing Twitter campaign that raised more than $92,000 for clean water. Milano also has put her star power behind TwitCause, which features a cause per week, most recently VH1's Save the Music program. TwitCause has amassed more than 500,000 followers, and its weekly campaigns reach more than 7.5 million people, according to a manager with The Experience Project, which runs the campaign. In other words, Twitter is about more than what you had for lunch.
"Every week, TwitCause features a cause," says Arsineh Ghazarian, community manager for The Experience Project. So far, about 20 percent of the featured causes have been music- or environment-related.
But you don't have to be a Charmed One or a musician to become part of TwitCause. Anyone can nominate causes by visiting experienceproject.com/twitcause.
Each nominated cause gets a dedicated group page where people can discuss their passion for the cause and even make direct donations.
TwitCause has helped large organizations including The Humane Society and Komen for the Cure, along with smaller charities such as Beauty Bus, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit that provides in-home beauty makeovers for home-bound, terminally or chronically ill patients and their primary caregivers.
TwitCause also has worked with the nonprofit Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, raising thousands of dollars to plant trees around the world with every retweet (the e-mail forward of Twitterland).
So the next time your friend or significant other complains about your Twitter addiction, mention that you're twittering for fame AND good causes.
