How would you survive 69 days underground? Edison Peņa used the power of Elvis Presley. Peņa, one of the 33 Chilean miners rescued last month, is an Elvis fan and a runner. While he was trapped, he put Elvis on the iPod and ran to keep up his spirits. Now Peņa plans to run in the New York City Marathon. Officials at Graceland, the home of Elvis in Memphis, Tennessee, also have invited the miner for an all-expenses-paid visit.
According to the Elvis.com website, updated by The King's royal subjects, Peņa plans to run 26-mile Ing New York City Marathon on Nov. 7.
During his underground ordeal, Peņa used running to release the tension. He ran up to six miles a day, through accessible tunnels, while listening to Elvis on his iPod.
He even asked that Elvis music be sent into the mine so he and other trapped mine workers could have sing-a-longs. The music was sent over by Elvis Presley Enterprises. Peņa was later invited by marathon officials to participate in the upcoming 26-mile run.
Graceland and the Memphis Convention & Visitors Bureau also invited Peņa for an all-expenses-paid trip for two. He plans to make the trek next year, and stay at the historic Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis.
Peņa's favorite Elvis song? Media accounts don't mention any, but "Walk a Mile in my Shoes" sounds appropriate.
