The Goldman Environmental Prize annually honors "grassroots environmental heroes from the six inhabited continental regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Islands and Island Nations, North America, and South and Central America." These individuals are recognized for "sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, often at great personal risk," with the added hope that such prizes "inspire other ordinary people to take extraordinary actions to protect the natural world."
One of this year's Goldman recipients is Humberto Ríos Labrada, a scientist and biodiversity researcher who "worked with farmers to increase crop diversity and develop low-input agricultural systems, encouraging Cuba's shift from agricultural chemical dependence toward sustainability." Rios is also a folk singer who, says Frances Robles of the Miami Herald, "uses a guitar and a song to spread the benefits of organic farming."
