Singer/songwriter Jewel performed an acoustic version of her unreleased song "The Shape of You" at this year's Emmy Awards, where TV stars also talked about fighting cancer through donations. Jewel gives a drop about providing clean drinking water, too, and is asking for help from fans.
Jewel founded Project Clean Water more than 10 years ago. The California nonprofit targets villages around the world with clean water problems, and works with communities to find sustainable solutions to provide safe drinking water, according to Jewel's website.
The nonprofit is working with The Voss Foundation and Virgin Unite to provide water to a village in sub-Saharan Africa. Jewel is urging fans to text DROP to 85944 to give $5 to the effort.
"Solutions and technologies exist to provide clean, affordable drinking water anywhere in the world," Jewel says. "These solutions will save lives, reduce financial burdens, foster peace, and relieve millions of people from worrying about their next drink of water."
The campaign has a website at giveadrop.com that puts the names of contributors inside colorful drops of water, along with the state in which they live. The bigger the donation, the bigger the drop.
Jewel performed "The Shape of You," about the loss of a friend to cancer, for an "In Memoriam Tribute" to TV stars who have passed away since last year's ceremony. Some of those stars died of cancer, including Roy Disney, Lynn Redgrave and Dennis Hopper.
The song, previously unreleased, is now available on iTunes. The "Stand Up 2 Cancer" special, highlighted during the Emmys, airs Sept. 10 on major networks.
