Positive Legacy is the new, nonprofit arm of Cloud 9 Adventures, an entertainment production company that puts on tropical music festivals. Those festivals recently included the 8th annual Jam Cruise in January. Positive Legacy is aimed at cutting the impact of such events and making positive contributions to the communities where the events are held. Like what, you ask? How about donating instruments to allow a Jamaican community center to start up the marching band they've always wanted?

It's just the start, organizers say. "Positive Legacy's goal is to transcend cultural boundaries by learning about the needs and aspirations of the communities they travel to, and inspire music fans and artists to take action," a spokeswoman says. "Efforts include donation drives, gifts, financial contributions and events that allow the festival participants, artists and community members to experience their interconnectedness."

The nonprofit worked with Music Matters, an education company, to outfit Claremont's Rural Retreat Community Center with about $15,000 worth of instruments, and put on a celebration to mark the occasion. Passengers and musicians on the cruise helped out.

So this sounds like more than your typical party barge. It's a nice change of pace from partying without a purpose, dontcha think?

The artists on cruise No. 8 also helped out, including members of Toubab Krewe, The Motet, and Hot Buttered Rum.

The cruisers hosted a benefit in Grand Cayman too, for the Reef Environmental Education Foundation, which works to protect threatened grouper spawning habitat and eradicate the invasive lionfish from local waters.
