Instrumental means music without words. Or serving as a means, like being Instrumental to a cause. In this case, Instrumental means a new music site dedicated to artists who have a passion for positive change. These are singers, songwriters, guitarists, drummers, bassists --- even keyboard players --- who are using their celebrity status to make a difference, from social justice to the politics of the environment.
Being a rock, pop, country or other star is one thing. Using that influence to make a change is what interests us. Instrumental profiles everyone from hot indie artists to major-label acts. There's original interviews and industry news, free mp3 downloads and video featuring a diverse group of artists --- from Jack Johnson to Moby and Jackson Browne.
And the content isn't just from some fly-by-night, one-hit wonder. Instrumental is an arm of Discovery Communications, which already boasts two top-tier environmental sites, PlanetGreen.com and TreeHugger.com.
"With Instrumental, we are creating a platform where artists from all backgrounds and styles join their music and their passions in one place," said Ken Rother, vice president of digital for Planet Green. "We are looking for emerging talent and established acts that can help inspire, engage and move our audience through their stories and their music."
