Animal Collective have perhaps done more to push the boundaries of pop music this decade than any band save Radiohead. Yet they're still pretty under the radar in the context of mainstream music--which is why I was a bit surprised to see them advocating for PETA in the animal rights' group's campaign to stop the Canadian seal hunt. Usually, PETA nabs high profile folks like Pamela Anderson and Che Guevara's daughter for their promos--not art pop bands.
Sure, it makes sense on the most basic level--Animal Collective has the word 'animal' in it, so who better to become poster boys for the anti-seal hunt movement than an experimental noise-pop band from Brooklyn? But hey, if the guys want to lend a hand, more power to them. Below, the group explains why they've taken up the cause for PETA: (via Stereogum)
Animal Collective posed for PETA for its Celebrity Ad Series, a movement designed to draw attention to Canada's annual seal hunt. The seal hunt is indeed an atrocious event, and perhaps Animal Collective can help ignite the ire of indie rock aficionados and socially conscious hipsters everywhere.
Also, if you're not familiar with Animal Collective, you should give them a listen. They're good.
