The "Hope for Haiti" telethon held last week drew more than 83 million viewers, including about 24 million in the United States, MTV officials say. The star-studded musical event, shown on networks including our own Planet Green, also has drawn more than $61 million in donations so far. And donations will continue to be taken for the next six months, while relief organizations work to help Haiti recover from a Jan. 12 earthquake.
More stats on "Hope for Haiti" include almost 2 million live video streams on the internet and smartphones while the show was going on. Those streams included viewing through a special iPhone app created for the show.
Shows you how media is changing (has changed?). Donations will be taken for the next six months on all the platforms, including snail mail:
- Online: www.hopeforhaitinow.org
- Phone: 877-99-HAITI
- Text: Text "GIVE" to 50555
- Mail: Hope For Haiti Now Fund, Entertainment Industry Foundation, 1201 West 5th Street, Suite T-700, Los Angeles, CA 90017
The $61 million and counting will be distributed to seven organizations: Oxfam America, Partners in Health, the Red Cross, UNICEF, United Nations World Food Programme, Yele Haiti Foundation and the Clinton Bush Haiti Foundation.
Sales of the "Hope for Haiti" album also are breaking records. The benefit album is predicted to top the Billboard 200 album charts this week, marking the first time in Billboard history that an all-digital album has risen to the top, Ecorazzi reports.
