READ MORE ABOUT:
With 2009 winding down, there's a bevy of "Best of the Year" lists when it comes to music. Try this one on for size: "A Top of the Charity Charts List of Green Music (or at least environmentally and socially conscious efforts by artists)." The title's kind of long, but it covers the topic. It's just a partial list. If you have more to add, please put your entries in the comments section.
Top Charity Auction Earner:
The Grateful Dead. Even without frontman Jerry Garcia, these longtime American rockers continue to tour. They raised more than $400,000 this year for the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and a number of other charities, according to bloggers at Look To The Stars. The money came from ticket auctions.
The runner-up:
The Jonas Brothers, at $300,000, by auctioning off meet-and-greet and other get-to-know-the-trio events. The money benefits the band's Change for the Children Foundation.
Tippy Top Charity Earner:
Former boy band-er Justin Timberlake, who raked in more than $9 million for the Shriners Hospital for Children, beating out Bono and Madonna.
Top U.K. Christmas song:
In an annual contest for the top Christmas song in the U.K., the politically active rap-rock band Rage Against the Machine beat out X-Factor winner Joe McElderry with "Killling In The Name," a song from back in 1992. The members of RATM have pledged to donate all the profits from 500,000 downloads of the old single to the homelessness charity Shelter.
'Green' Artist of the Decade:
Punk rockers Green Day (enviros in name and action) have taken home several music awards this year. The readers of Rolling Stone bestowed them as the winners of best single, finest album and most accomplished artist of the decade.
One of the youngest green artists of the year:
Hailey Hinnen is a 12-year-old girl from Wichita, Kansas. She's been spending Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays on the street, braving the winter cold to bring Christmas cheer via her violin. Why? To collect money for the Kansas Food Bank. And she's been attracting large crowds.
