The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards is about more than music and glitter (and allegedly popular or acclaimed songs you've never heard before). This year's list of nominees for the Jan. 31 awards show includes a number of socially conscious artists (many of them profiled right here at Planet Green).
One artist who might throw you for a loop is Lady Gaga, with her wacky fashion sense, penchant for fake blood and early Madonna-like buzz. It turns out The Lady, whose song "Poker Face" is nominated for Record of the Year, has a soft side. Gaga was caught at a charity event in June 2009, where she helped decorate a garden for people affected by HIV at Body Positive North West in Manchester, England.
'I have lots of people in my life who have been affected by the virus and a lot of gay and lesbian friends who are confronted with fears about that sort of lifestyle and the situation of HIV that we have to be mindful of everyday," Gaga says in a post at The Lesbian & Gay Foundation web site. "I am a very supportive, proactive woman and I really just wanted to paint with them today."
Lady Gaga also helped raise money for New York City nonprofits in August 2009.
She'll be performing at the Grammys along with other artists who give a damn, including Green Day and Dave Matthews Band. The Crystal Method, which supports solar power and recycles synths, also is on the list of nominees.
And the rock band Bon Jovi, another nominee, will be taking votes on which song to play on the show. Frontman Jon Bon Jovi has a nonprofit foundation dedicated to helping spruce up his home state of New Jersey.
