I wrote about the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater last month. The organization has long been an innovator in environmental education. The Clearwater Sloop itself, was launched in 1969 and was the first ship of its kind to promote science and ecological education aboard a vessel. Today, the impact of the program is widespread. It educates 15,000 students annually and involves over 200 teachers a year in the program.

And this year's fundraiser boasts no shortage of talented musicians. The Clearwater's Great Hudson River Revival 2010 will run on Saturday and Sunday June 19 and 20 at Croton Point Park in Croton-on-Hudson, NY. Get tickets for the country's oldest environmental festival here. Headliners include Steve Earle and Shawn Colvin, Joan Osborne, Buckwheat Zydeco, Railroad Earth, the David Bromberg Quartet, Keller Williams, the subdudes, Donna the Buffalo, and Pete Seeger.

Other appearances include Steve Forbert and Dan Bern, Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, Old 97s frontman Rhett Miller, Eileen Ivers, Ryan Montbleau Band, Felice Brothers and Jonathan Brooke, Angel Band, Milton, Mike Doughty from Soul Coughing, and many more. The festival is totally family friendly with storytellers and kid-friendly entertainers, crafts, nautical exhibits, rides aboard the Sloop, a Green Living Expo, and loads of other activities to get the whole family involved. The festival is just another example of how the power of song can evoke environmental activism.

The festival will raise money for Clearwater's ongoing fight to keep the Hudson River clean. Specifically, the group is working to remove PCB contamination from the Hudson River, reducing the use of pesticides that then drain into the river, and educating the public on the negative effects of over development on the river.
