Green Glossary: Voluntary Simplicity

Voluntary simplicity "has just about as many definitions as there are individuals who practice it. Simple living is not about living in poverty or self-inflicted deprivation. Rather, it is about living an examined life—one in which you have determined what is important, or 'enough,' for you, discarding the rest."

Living Off-Grid: Working with the Sun

I used to be more of a night owl, but off-grid living encourages me to live by the sun. Once the sun goes down at about 9 pm, I tend to stay awake for an hour or so, read with my headlamp or listen to a podcast.

Living Off Grid: Cook Pasta without Pre-Heating or Pre-Boiling

Since I live more than 100 miles from a gas line, I have to use a propane stove for my cooking. The gas comes from a tank on-site, instead of a pipe underground. Whenever it runs out, I have to make a trip into town to refill it. Even though I only have to refill it once every two months, it is still an incentive to conserve my propane as much as possible.

Style Your Hair Without The Heat

Less is more when it comes down to being green. Much of the idea is to reduce the use of resources and harmful energy (which uses largely non-renewable resources). Although it may not seem substantial to you, cutting out the use of hair appliances does make a difference, even if small. By styling your hair without all the heat, you'll not only be saving yourself on energy, but you'll also be able to donate the appliances you already have and with every donation comes one less purchase of a newly produced item. (That's a good thing!)
