Established in 1970, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) has been hard at work across the nation, protecting and restoring our planet's natural resources. And they just happen to take their work seriously. Their staff of nearly 300 attorneys, scientists, and policy analysts and pool of over 1.2 million members and activists have helped lay down the law, enacting standards such as the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. NRDC also serve as eco-watchdogs, overseeing politicians and corporations to make sure they're cutting carbon emissions and saving energy. Beyond that, other initiatives include saving the world's oceans and endangered spaces, putting an end to toxic chemicals and encouraging the greening of China. Lawyers, business folk and aspiring activists who get excited by the idea of encouraging Capital Hill to give a damn, this is the group for you.

Earth Day Activities and Volunteering with NRDC

Become a BioGems Defender: Launched in 2001 and with 500,000 people strong, the NRDC is using the power of citizen activism to prevail corporate interests and help defend threatened wild lands and wildlife throughout North and South America. The coolest, most convenient aspect of it all? It's all being done online. Whether you want to protect pristine Patagonia, Chile or the threatened polar bear population, join the cause and become a BioGem defender by clicking over to the website.

Take Action: Can't get enough online petition goodness? Head over to NRDC's action center where you can ask your representative to support the Healthy Oceans Act, Obama's clean energy budget, California's Clean Car Program and many other important issues.
